AUSTIN — The Faith Academy Flames stayed close in the first half, but let the momentum get away from them during the second half Sept. 26 in a 50-13 loss to Texas School for the Deaf.
The Flames racked up more than 200 yards rushing as a team.
“The type of defense they play, I felt like we could grind it out,” Flames head coach Russ Roberts said. “The problem was we got so far behind, we couldn’t do that and get back in the game.”
Midway through the second quarter, Faith Academy took a 13-12 lead after a 41-yard touchdown run by Rich Coleman.
Faith Academy (1-4, 0-1) also struck first in the contest. The Flames drove almost 70 yards in seven minutes on their first drive and punched in a touchdown on a Jonathan Bryer two-yard run.
Bryer rushed for just over 100 yards. Coleman rushed for 75.
Texas School for the Deaf took a 20-13 lead on the following possession on a 14-yard run and two-point conversion.
Roberts said he knew TSD would rely on their rushing attack, so he schemed for the Flames to stop the run and pressure the Rangers to pass.
However, TSD made long gains on deep passes against Faith Academy.
“I really felt at halftime if we corrected those (miscues) we could make a game out of it. We had a hard time stopping them,” he said. “I didn’t know if we could get back in the game, but I thought we could keep it close.”
Texas School for the Deaf opened the 2nd half with a touchdown. The Flames fumbled the ball away on their following possession. However, the Rangers immediately coughed it back up.
The Flames could never take advantage, though. The Flames punted twice, threw an interception and fumbled again in the half, while TSD extended their lead.
Faith Academy plays its first home game since the first game of the season Oct. 3 against Shiner St. Paul.
The Flames, after playing four road games in a row, finish the season with four of their final five games at home.
The game is 7:30 p.m. at Pony Stadium, 1511 Pony Circle Drive in Marble Falls.
