WACO — The Faith Academy girls basketball team scorched Waco Vanguard 63-37 on Jan. 17.

The Lady Flames led 18-13 after the first period and 31-25 at the half.

The victory was their 80th consecutive district win in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.

Faith head coach Jerry English said his squad was experiencing foul trouble and noted three players had three fouls in the first half.

He credited Vanguard for taking advantage of shooting one-and-one free throws five minutes into the contest.

Faith (17-4 overall, 3-0 in District 4-2A) scored 15 points in the third period and only allowed five, keeping up the pressure in the final period. The Lady Flames outscored the Vikings 17-7 in the last eight minutes of the contest.

“Once we started running, we were more ourselves,” English said. “I was very, very pleased. Vanguard is considerably better.”

Lady Flames senior forward Kristen Cherry played well, he said, noting she was just a few stats away from a triple-double.

“Kristen had about as good of a ballgame as anyone we’ve had,” he said. “I’m very, very pleased with how she played.”

Also on Jan. 17, the Faith Academy boys varsity team lost 71-29 to Vanguard. The Flames are 7-7 overall and 2-1 in District 4-2A.
