MARBLE FALLS — No one wants to hear that Burnet County is a dump, which is why local efforts remain vigorous to stem a tide of contaminants at illegal trash sites before they taint waterways and wells, officials said.

“Yeah, it’s a problem,” said Precinct 4 Constable Chris Jett. “It’s something we’re working on.”

At risk are the lakes along the Colorado River basin, which serve nearly a million souls here and beyond, and the groundwater sources where 50 percent of Burnet County gets its drinking water.
