HBay murder case featured on ‘48 Hours’ Saturday night

MARBLE FALLS — A high-profile murder case that landed a Horseshoe Bay man in prison for killing his father will be the focus of a national news program 9 p.m. Saturday.

The life and murder of Horseshoe Bay millionaire Charles Clinton White will be presented on CBS “48 Hours Mystery” just nine months after White’s son, 40-year-old Darin White was sent to prison for 20 years after pleading guilty to strangling his father in 2005.

The program will air on Austin’s CBS affiliate, KEYE-42.

Darin White’s attorney, Eddie Shell of Marble Falls, argued unsuccessfully that his client killed Charles White in a fit of passion, and sought to paint  the elder White as an abusive man who made his son snap.

Charles White, 73, was the millionaire founder of a chain of beauty colleges and heir to his family’s auto-parts store fortune. He was well-known for his wild parties at his Horseshoe Bay home.

He was found dead Nov. 11, 2005. The elder White had suffered numerous trauma wounds to his head and had been strangled with an electrical cord.

According to a promotion for the “48 Hours” program on the CBS Web site, the show will focus on Charles White’s womanizing ways, detailing how he satisfied his sexual appetite “with the girlfriends of his own son Darin, who use also used to pick up women to fulfill his needs.”

According to testimony at the murder trial of Darin White, Charles White frequently berated his son, ordering him to act as a servant during lavish parties and verbally and mentally abusing him. All that treatment eventually led to Charles White’s murder at his son’s hands, according to court testimony.

The CBS report was filed by reporter Peter Van Sant. The program has been titled “Blood and Money on Horseshoe Bay.”
