Officers train in high-tech mobile crime simulator

MARBLE FALLS — Officers from the Marble Falls Police Department honed their crime-fighting skills using a mobile Advanced Interactive Systems firearms training simulator during the first week in February.

The $370,000 mobile simulator is shared among 10 counties through Capital Area Council of Governments grants.

Using pre-recorded actors and computer software, the simulator displays suspects and bystanders in scenarios that train an officer how to react. The result can be recorded and replayed by the instructor to help officers make those critical decisions in high-stress and potentially violent scenarios.

Burnet County sheriff candidates clash over jail security

BURNET — The Burnet County sheriff and his opponent — who happens to be the former sheriff — took aim at each other over jail security during a candidates' forum.

Incumbent Sheriff W.T. Smith faces challenger and ex-Sheriff Joe Pollock for a second four-year term during the upcoming Republican primary. Smith defeated Pollock nearly four years ago.

Both candidates fired barbs over inmate escapes during the Burnet County Republican Club candidates' forum Feb. 12 at the Burnet Community Center.

Neon signs could dim under changes to Marble Falls ordinance

MARBLE FALLS — It could be lights out for some signs in the city — including those at the famous Blue Bonnet Cafe — under a new ordinance the City Council is considering, a business owner said.

The council during the Feb. 7 meeting heard about changes to the ordinance, which city staffers say wouldn't affect most signs — only electronic or neon.d

Motorcycle accident west of Marble Falls claims man's life

BURNET -- A motorcycle rider whose vehicle crashed into a fence pole Feb. 6 died from his injuries not long after the accident, officials said.

Carl Dean New, 23, was pronounced dead at 5:35 p.m. by Dr. Laura Beech at Seton Highland Lakes Hospital.

The accident was reported about 4:05 p.m. on FM 1980 about an eighth of a mile from the intersection with RR 1431, just west of Marble Falls.

Fire crews extinguish La Ventana blaze

MARBLE FALLS — Firefighters quickly contained a blaze in the kitchen of a home in the La Ventana subdivision early Feb. 6.

The cause of the fire at the dwelling in the 400 block of Cielo Circle remains under undetermined, investigators said. No injuries were reported and damages — mainly from water — are estimated at $6,000.
