MARBLE FALLS — Signs could soon go up in city parks asking motorists to voluntarily refrain from using cell phones when they drive through, according to a proposal under consideration by the City Council.
However, freedom of speech issues may arise if the city passes such an ordinance, City Attorney Barbara Boulware-Wells told the council July 19.
"There might be some difficulties with us doing that," Boulware-Wells said. "You have to step lightly. If you don't give the impression there is an ordinance behind it (the signs), you can do something."
State law forbids the use of cell phones while driving through school zones, and Austin officials prohibit texting on cell phones while driving anywhere in the city, said Josh Parker, who sits on the Capital Improvement Plan and Comprehensive Plan Steering committees.
