BURNET — Because of a new federal law, Burnet Consolidated Independent School District prices for students' meals are going up during the coming school year.
BCISD trustees at a meeting last month voted to raise prices by 25 cents and charge elementary students $2 per meal and secondary students $2.50 per meal when school begins in September, officials said.
Because of the new federal regulation, the board may approve more price increases later, officials said.
"The board will need to take action one year at a time," Business Manager Preston Ingram said May 31.
Both price hikes have nothing to do with the current debate in the Legislature on state budget cuts to public school districts, Ingram said.
"They (meal prices) are now dictated by federal law and regulation," he added.
The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act approved last year by the federal government mandates $2.46 as the average price for school meals.
