BURNET — A fun-loving teenager who enjoyed playing in the Burnet High School marching band is how relatives and teachers remember a soldier killed in action Memorial Day in Afghanistan.

Retired Burnet High School band director Mike Lewis said Army Pfc. Anthony Nunn, 19, played trombone in the Bulldog band for three years.

Nunn joined the military after graduating in May 2010.

"He was a good trombone player," Lewis said June 1. "He loved being part of the band. He would jump in wherever we needed him. He was a hard worker. It could be 130 degrees out there on that asphalt practice field, and he would just smile and never complain."

Last fall, the Army assigned Nunn to Afghanistan with Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky., according to Department of Defense officials.

While supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, Nunn died of wounds May 30 inflicted by insurgents who attacked his patrol unit with an improvised explosive device in the Paktika province, the military said.

The infantryman had served with the Army for little less than one year.

Friends said he was an easygoing teen.
