BURNET — Police are reminding students to be more careful crossing streets after a 12-year-old schoolboy was hit by a car Feb. 25 on U.S. 281 near Burnet Middle School.
The accident happened just before school — about 7:30 a.m. in the 1100 block of 281, north of RR 963, officers said.A crosswalk may be coming in the future for that section of road, said Police Chief Paul Nelson.
The student, who suffered broken bones in his leg, was rushed to Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas in Austin, police said. He was released the next day.
Nelson said no charges were filed against the driver of the 2006 Ford Mustang.
"(According to) witnesses at the scene, it appears she was not speeding at all," Nelson said. "So far there is nothing that we can see that violated any laws."
Nelson said the boy was not in a designated crosswalk. The driver was in her lane, the chief added.
Students need to wait until it's clear before crossing the road, the chief said.
"Hopefully by next school year we'll have a crosswalk," he said.
Anyone crossing a road should always use a crosswalk, he added. If one is not available, then cross at an intersection.
