BURNET — When shooting victim Gabby Martinez, 7, performed a cartwheel the day doctors took the cast off her arm, her mother knew the child she cherished was on her way to recovery.
IN PHOTO: Gabby Martinez, 7, of Burnet enjoys swimming, shopping, playing with her dogs and laughing. But that almost came to an end May 31 when a man fired a shotgun into her home, wounding Gabby, her brother and their mother. The girl was in intensive care for two days and has undergone two surgeries. Another is scheduled Aug. 5 to remove shotgun pellets from her liver. A benefit to help the family with medical expenses is scheduled for Saturday, July 17, at the Galloway-Hammond Recreation Center’s pavilion, 1601 S. Water St. (U.S. 281) in Burnet from noon-7 p.m. Staff photo by Daniel Clifton
