BURNET — After several days of deliberation, the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District board has hired Dr. Ann Dixon to serve as interim superintendent.
She is expected to take over by the end of the month, even as Superintendent Jeff Hanks moves on to his new role as the top administrator for the Weatherford Independent School District.
"I told the (BCISD) board, if you want somebody to just sit in the chair, then don't hire me, because I am going to make decisions," Dixon said.
The board voted to hire Dixon during the meeting Nov. 21.
"We feel fortunate we have someone with her qualifications," board President Andy Feild said. "She has lots of experience. We are very pleased she applied for the position and has accepted it."
Dixon is the former full-time superintendent for the San Marcos and Somerset school districts.
During a 40-year career as an educator, the Florida native has served 11 other Texas public school districts as an interim superintendent.
"It has kind of become my job," Dixon quipped.
Hanks, who has been with BCISD 13 years, assumes his new duties next month at Weathford ISD, which is ranked as 5A with 7,600 students — more than twice the size of Burnet, which is 3A.
Weatherford is located west of Fort Worth.
BCISD board members hope to hire a permanent superintendent by spring.
Also, since BCISD Athletic Director Doyle Walker recently announced he plans to retire by the end of the year, the district must also hire a new athletic director soon , Feild added.
“We have to get the ball rolling,” Feild said.
Trustees will meet Nov. 28 to discuss a new director. The board plans to hire a candidate from within the district, Feild added.
