BURNET — Higher water and wastewater rates look likely for residents pending a vote next month by the City Council.
Paying for construction and improvement to the city's water system is driving the increase in prices, not more consumption, officials said.
Public reaction is mixed, said City Manager David Vaughn.
"Unfortunately we are dealing with aging infrastructure that must be replaced," he said.
For commercial water-use, the rates are expected to increase more than 3 percent, from $4.63 per 2,000 gallons later this year to $4.77 per 2,000 gallons by 2013, according to city records.
New residential water-use rates are also expected to climb more than 3 percent, from $3.74 per 4,000 gallons later this year to $3.86 per 4,000 gallons by 2013.
