MARBLE FALLS — A small Marble Falls development is providing much-needed water for the drought-stricken Spicewood Beach area, where a well supporting 1,100 residents failed last week.
The Lower Colorado River Authority has a 90-day contract with Capstone Ranch to truck in 4,000 gallons of water seven times a day to supply the Spicewood Beach Regional Water System, officials said.
Until the well failed Jan. 30, the Spicewood Beach system answered the water needs for residents of Spicewood Beach, Lakeside Beach, Lake Oaks and Eagle Bluff, as well as Spicewood Elementary School, where there are more than 200 students.
"It will continue probably another two or three months," said Bryan Teeple, an official with Captsone.
Teeple Partners manages the Capstone subdivision , CR 401 between Texas 71 and FM 2147 East.
"There have been no complaints," he added Feb. 6.
The development includes nine homes, Teeple said.
After reading a report about the failing well in a newspaper, Teeple said he and his partners offered to help.
"We read about it in the paper," Teeple said. "We called them (LCRA officials)."
Capstone residents receive their water from the Ellenburger Aquifer through a well that can produce about 1 million gallons of water per day, Teeple said.
After a meeting with LCRA water managers, Teeple and his partners agreed to truck water from Capstone into the Spicewood Beach area.
"It was a good fit, and we went from there," Teeple said.
LCRA has agreed to pay Capstone $2 per every 1,000 gallons hauled by truck to the system, he added.
The authority will not charge Spicewood customers extra for the water hauled, nor will residents see rates go up, LCRA General Manager Rebecca Motal said.
Stage 4 water restrictions remained in place for the Spicewood community through Feb. 6. The restrictions prohibit all outside watering.
For questions about the restrictions, call LCRA at 1-(800) 776-5272 extension 6377, 1-(800) 776-5272 extension 6765 or (512) 397-6765.
