HORSESHOE BAY — A 41-year-old man suspected in a string of thefts by check is behind bars again, this time accused of forgery after more than $3,700 went missing from an elderly woman's bank account.
Kelley Russell Mauldin, a former Horseshoe Bay resident with no permanent address, remained Jan. 30 in the Burnet County Jail on three counts of forgery, according to records. Bond for each charge is set at $5,000.
He is accused of stealing $3,750 from an elderly Horseshoe Bay resident he befriended about a year ago, said Police Chief Bill Lane.
While the victim was on vacation, a man stole some checks from her and wrote them to himself by forging the woman's name. He later cashed the checks at a Kingsland bank.
Horseshoe Bay police arrested Mauldin Jan. 24. The crime is usually a third-degree felony, but the charges are enhanced under state law when the victim is 65 or older, Lane said.
According to records, Mauldin had only been out of jail for 20 days before being arrested by Horseshoe Bay police.
Marble Falls police detained him Jan. 2 on 11 charges through a Burnet County court alleging theft of property by check and one charge from the Marble Falls Municipal Court on theft of service.
He was released Jan. 4 after posting a surety bond.
He was also hit with an additional theft of property by check charge by the Burnet County Sheriff's Office in addition to the other cases from Jan. 2.
A report indicates the 12 theft of property by check incidents were spread out in 2008 and 2009 and the theft of service occurred in 2011.
Mauldin is scheduled for arraignment on the theft of property by check charges Feb. 6 before Judge Donna Klaeger.
Those are Class B misdemeanors while the theft of service charge is a state jail felony.
