BURNET — The discovery of a rabid raccoon has police reminding residents to stay away from animals acting strangely.

Animal Control Officer Kim Wilson recently trapped the raccoon in the 400 block of North Rhomberg Street, officials said. It tested positive for the rabies virus.

There are no indications the animal came into contact with humans or other animals.

Residents who see an animal that is sick or acting strangely can contact the dispatcher at (512) 756-8080.

Do not approach or touch the animal, officers said.

Rabies episodes are on the rise in Burnet County, which has the third highest number of cases reported in Texas, officials said.
