Burnet baseball faces rain, tough Texans in bi-district loss

FROM STAFF REPORTS

WIMBERLEY — The Burnet High School baseball season ended its season with a bi-district championship loss to Wimberley on May 8-9.

The Bulldogs (14-11-2 overall, 5-4 District 25-4A) won the first game 3-0 on May 8 but lost a doubleheader 8-6 and 7-1 on May 9.

Rain forced officials to move the entire series to Wimberley.

Burnet’s lone win came courtesy of pitcher Taylor Barksdale, who struck out seven. Hunter Reagor had one strikeout.

In addition, Barksdale recorded three RBIs off two hits against Texans pitcher Seth Storm.

Storm finished the contest with six strikeouts.

With its season on the line, Wimberley began the second game by plating four runs in the first inning. The Texans added another run in the third inning before the Bulldogs crossed the plate to trim the deficit to 5-1.

Wimberley scored two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth for an 8-1 advantage.

But in the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs began to rally by plating five runs to cut the deficit to 8-6. That’s as close as they would get. Garrett Cox recorded 4 RBIs for Burnet.

Texans pitcher Justin Gray struck out six in six innings, while reliever Gavin Gonzales had two strikeouts. Burnet pitcher Trent Rockafellow struck out two.

The third game was scoreless until the fifth inning. That’s when the Texans plated five runs. They added two more in the sixth. Wimberley had a total of four hits, but the Bulldogs had four errors. Pitcher Gavin Gonzales gave up one run off six hits and struck out seven in seven innings.

Lyle Pogue had the only Burnet RBI of the contest.
