MARBLE FALLS — The cold wind might have swept across the Highland Lakes on Nov. 12 during the annual food drive by KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune and The Picayune, but readers and listeners warmed up everyone with their generous donations.

At the latest tally, the community donated more than $8,000 in food and money.

“The generosity of the KBEY listeners and The Picayune readers just can’t be underestimated,” said Amber Weems, the KBEY president and The Picayune publisher. “Thanks to these donations, the two food pantries — The Helping Center of Marble Falls and LACare of Burnet — will be able to help so many families and people. I just can’t say ‘thank you’ enough to our listeners and readers.”

While a steady chill lingered throughout the day, people just kept streaming in at the two drop-off locations: the Best Little Pawn Shop in Marble Falls and the KBEY studio on the courthouse square in Burnet.

Despite her chattering teeth, Kay Baker of KBEY’s “Wake Up Call” manned the outside booth at the Best Little Pawn Shop throughout the event.

“Sure, it was cold, but when you think about the people who could go hungry without the work these two food pantries — and all of those around the Highland Lakes — do, what’s a little chill?” Baker asked with a smile. “It’s amazing to see how the Highland Lakes folks turn out to help their neighbors.”

If you missed the drive, you can still drop off non-perishable food items or monetary donations at The Helping Center, 1315 Broadway St. in Marble Falls, or LACare, 507 W. Buchanan Drive (Texas 29) in Burnet on the grounds of Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church.

Or just drop them off at The Picayune/KBEY office, 1007 Ave. K in Marble Falls.

Collection boxes also are still out at Northland Communications, 1101 Mission Hill Drive in Marble Falls, and Mattress Firm, 2508 U.S. 281 North in Marble Falls.

And don’t forget: The annual KBEY/The Picayune toy drive benefitting the Highland Lakes Christmas is for Kids is just around the corner on Dec. 17. More details are coming on KBEY and in The Picayune.
