Marble Falls baseball crushes Canyon Lake to open season and Mustang Classic

MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School baseball team began the 2014 season with a giant explosion.

The Mustangs (1-0) crushed Canyon Lake 15-5 in 4½ innings Feb. 20 to begin its own Hill Country Mustang Classic.

Senior Domenic Patterson led the way with two home runs that resulted in four RBIs. Senior Cullen Vaught added four RBIs and was a home run away from completing the cycle. Junior David Spurlock finished with four RBIs.

“Some guys on this team that have a lot of experience have been starting since sophomores,” Mustangs head coach J.T. Blair said. “Some freshmen we’ve expected big things from. We’re capable of being explosive.”

Of the nine Mustangs who batted, seven recorded at least one hit. The other reached base at least once with a walk or an error.

“I feel like we’re pretty good up and and down the lineup,” Blair said. “This team has the capability of being one of the best hitting teams I’ve had.”

No player’s night was better than Patterson’s.

The senior infielder’s two home runs went over the left-field wall, about 340 feet on each.

Both were off fast balls, he said, which were thrown just below his waist.

“I was seeing the ball really well,” he said. “It felt great. We’re all seeing the ball really well. A lot of us have been staying after practice and hitting, hitting in cages. I think this shows what we have.”

Patterson signed a letter of intent to play for Weatherford College earlier in February.

Defensively, the Mustangs recorded two errors that resulted in one unearned run.

Senior pitcher Garrett Winslett (1-0) earned the win.

“I thought he settled down about the third inning,” Blair said. “He started off throwing the ball a little nervously early on.”
