MARBLE FALLS — As one of the leading offensive duos in District 25-4A, Marble Falls High School football players Garrett Gray and Brennen Wooten were recognized for their efforts by The Associated Press.

Gray, a senior receiver, was a first-team Class 4A all-state selection, while Wooten, a sophomore quarterback, was honorable mention.

“That’s awesome,” Mustangs head coach Todd Dodge said.

This is the second time Gray was named a member of the all-state team. He made the second team his junior year. This season, he led the Austin area with 76 receptions for 1,216 yards and 15 touchdowns. His two-year numbers are 158 receptions for 2,442 yards and 32 touchdowns.

This season, Gray rushed 14 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns and had a kickoff return for a touchdown.

Gray stopped playing football three years ago after his freshman season, missing his sophomore year. He returned to the program his junior year.

“He’s extremely explosive and extremely consistent,” he said. “He’s only played in 20 (varsity) games. One of the things Garrett and I talked about when he first got into our program was we were in a partnership. He was viewed as a guy who had potential. He has so much upside. I’m very proud of him for working his craft.”

Dodge also credits offensive coordinator and receivers coach Bill Poe for helping Gray, a University of Texas commit, improve during the past two years. When considering there are more than 300 Class 4A schools across the state with plenty of top receivers, Dodge said being a two-year all-state selection is incredible.

“It’s a great honor for Garrett and for our program,” he said.

He said the same of Wooten, who was in his first year of starting on the varsity level. At the age of 5, Wooten said he wanted to play for Dodge. Now, the Mustang is following in the footsteps of other Dodge quarterbacks, including Chase Daniel and Greg McElroy, who are both in the NFL; Riley Dodge, a member of the University of Texas coaching staff and Todd Dodge’s son; and Kenny Hill, a backup quarterback at Texas A&M University.

Dodge noted there aren’t many sophomores who have caught the eye of sports editors across the state. The quarterback completed 236 of 374 passes for 3,094 yards and 30 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also ran for 322 yards and two touchdowns on 67 carries.

“A lot of guys who have talent go to camps,” Dodge said. “People think there’s a good up-and-coming player. It’s quite another to do it on the field in one of the two or three toughest districts in the state. He got better as the year went on. To say I’m extremely proud is an understatement. I take a lot of pride in him. He’s a tremendous worker.”
